Local views at a local exhibition. From Friday 5th ‘Darwin’s Greenhouse’ and ‘Flask Walk’ will be making an appearance at the Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution’s Highgate Gallery. The exhibition is on until the 18th February. Watch this space for news of several more Hampstead paintings going local!

From Den Haag to Amsterdam and back down to Ghent there’s so much to see. With only a short time in the city of canals the best views – according to your taste – are probably from the water. Quite a few local people enjoyed the hot weather in a very relaxed manner, sitting by the boats drifting by.

Exhibition over now so must get back to painting. So what better than a scene I know really well. Where the tourist amphibious vehicles enter the water, near Vauxhall Bridge, and directly opposite the Tate Britain, the casual beachcomber can take in some iconic London sights.

A stroll across towards Hampstead Heath from Kenwood reveals – for locals – a familiar view. The huge house peeking through the woods is Athlone House. Over 150 years old it’s been a private house, an RAF college and was used by the NHS, but now very sadly it’s under threat of demolition. So I thought I’d paint it, as many have done before.

Pleased to have sold some paintings at the exhibition – now it’s back to work to come up with something new. On a bright – but very cold – day I saw a great reflection of Crouch End’s Clocktower in the window of the local bookshop. Quite a difficult image to tackle and I will need to try out different approaches, but here’s the first attempt….
