The bodies of the figures, men and children, and of the shire horses are taken from real life but the horses heads are similar to the “horse head” of an oil well pump. The installation, ‘the Rising Tide’ by Jason deClaires Taylor – is a comment on the impact of fossil fuels on our planet. The installation could be seen emerging from the Thames on the opposite side of the bank from the Houses of Parliament as the water level dropped.

InstallationAs the horses emerged from the river, so did the flotsam – the traffic cones, plastic bottles and other debris, which was a fitting comment on the theme of the sculpture.

A well trodden path – but for good reason. Beautiful weather and wonderful light. Hard to know where to start to paint, but the rowing boats look very welcoming, if only there were time to spare to hire one.

The satnav was switched on and the trip to Wrest Park began. So to all the back roads in Bedfordshire. It was a real mystery tour going to somewhere ‘new’. To one of Britain’s finest ‘secret gardens’ – all 90 acres of it. A fabulous place to inspire with its magnificent house with conservatory, formal and wooded gardens, a central walk along a gravel path surrounded by statues, giving the long view of the pavilion across the lake.

Exhibition over now so must get back to painting. So what better than a scene I know really well. Where the tourist amphibious vehicles enter the water, near Vauxhall Bridge, and directly opposite the Tate Britain, the casual beachcomber can take in some iconic London sights.

A perfect day for the seaside – sunny, warm with a light breeze and most of the summer crowds have left. There was a man with a hefty camera kit with all the fine lens and paraphernalia and a lady with a little dog (and a copy of Chekhov?).
